My kid was struggling with a tricky math problem.
After a few failed attempts, the frustration was building up.
I almost jumped in to help solve it, but instead, I said, “Wow, you’re really trying hard to figure this out. I’m proud of how you’re not giving up.”
Their face lit up—not because they’d solved the problem yet, but because they felt seen for their effort.
And you know what?
They gave it another shot and nailed it.
That moment reminded me how powerful it is to praise the process, not just the result.
It’s easy to focus on achievements—good grades, winning a game, or acing a recital—but there’s so much value in recognizing the journey.
When we praise effort, we’re teaching our kids that it’s okay to struggle, okay to fail, and that those moments are where the real growth happens.
It’s not always easy to watch them stumble, but reminding them (and ourselves) that mistakes are stepping stones can make a world of difference.
At home, we’ve started celebrating “mistake moments.”
If someone tries something new and it doesn’t work out, we cheer for the courage it took to try.
Whether it’s a messy science experiment or a burnt batch of cookies, we laugh it off and talk about what we learned.
It’s not about avoiding failure; it’s about showing that failure is just a part of learning.
So, let’s be their cheerleaders for trying, their support when they falter, and their example when it comes to embracing challenges.
By celebrating their persistence, we’re giving them the tools to face life’s hurdles with confidence and resilience.
Who knows, they might even teach us a thing or two about grit along the way.
Let’s grow together, one small step (and a few mistakes) at a time.
